This book aims to dissect the myths, beliefs, motivations and responses attached to marriage, the social and cultural accessories that make this great white elephant seem so essential to our happiness, when in truth it’s been staggering on the edge of functionality for quite some time now.

Tempting as it may be to assume so, I’m no isolated case, nor am I a bitter ageing hag who’s failed to find a husband, taken against the idea and decided to put everyone else off it too. Marriage rates all over the world are on the slide as more and more people decide to make their own choices, to live in ways that suit them rather than blindly doing exactly what their parents did. Especially considering that their parents probably got married because that was the only option for a nice boy or girl, and then found themselves battling through ugly divorces when they realised that the person their 19-year-old self thought was just fine did not satisfy the emotional needs of their 49-year-old self.

In February 2007 the BBC reported that wedding rates in the UK were at their lowest since records began. A total of 244, 710 people married in 2005, the lowest number since 1896. Weddings were down 10 per cent compared with the previous year. 1 And it’s not that people aren’t still falling in love and having committed relationships – much to organised religion’s dismay, it seems that part of the dip is due to the many couples choosing to live together for ages before they get married, or even to avoid marriage completely and happily maintain their status quo.
